No. 18: Financial Literacy and Investing for Teenagers in a Web3 World
While basic financial literacy is essential, here's two offerings teaching teens about investing in a web3 and digital asset future.
Today’s issue started as a tweet to think and learn about teaching financial literacy to teens and young adults. With a quick Google search I found lots of traditional financial literacy resources covering the basics including compound interest, time value of money, budgeting, and investing. Conventional and basic.
Then, I stumbled into more interesting offerings - teaching teens financial literacy in the age of web3 and crypto. Since the premise of this newsletter is a conversation around the future of learning and work, then we must include crypto - even in the face of the current crypto market volatility (Hint: it’s down big). I look forward to hearing your views on today’s topic.
First, some numbers…
27% - of Gen Z and Millennials have used BNPL (buy now, pay later) programs 1
56% - of Gen Z and Millennials turn to TikTok and Instagram for financial advice 2
12 - 80% of teens get their first smartphone at age 12 3
Financial literacy in the age of blockchain technology, crypto assets, and AI
My first reaction of the B.E.A.S.T.M.O.D.E curriculum created by Crypto Kids Camp was “YES! They are on to something valuable and necessary.”
B - Blockchain
E - Evolution of money
A - Artificial intelligence
S - Security (cyber)
T - Technology
M - Mining and machine learning
O - Online gaming
D - Drones
E - Engineering
The BEASTMODE program lies at the intersection of financial literacy in the age of blockchain technology. There’s nothing conventional about this new program in the landscape of traditional money classes for teens.
As a new program, we’ll be keeping our eyes on them to see how they gain traction and hopefully find a hungry audience for their teachings.
